What is Incense?
Incense is typically made from fragrance resins, woods and plant materials.
In traditional masala styled sticks, a paste is formed and then shaped around a bamboo stick or similar material. Although sticks are the most common form, there are also non-combustible forms of incense.
Often you’ll see priests burning frankincense or myrrh in orthodox religious temples. Other varieties include cones, scented ropes, resinous dhoops, and smudge sticks.
Zen priests transcribed a document in the 16th century which was referred to as The Ten Virtues of Koh.
This famous document described the benefits of incense in classic Japanese fashion:
The Ten Virtues of Koh
- It brings communication with the transcendent.
- It refreshes mind and body.
- It removes impurity.
- It brings alertness.
- It is a companion in solitude.
- In the midst of busy affairs, it brings a moment of peace.
- When it is plentiful, one never tires of it.
- When there is little, still one is satisfied.
- Age does not change its efficacy.
- Used everyday, it does no harm.
We also sell many cultural and religious products including dream-catchers, prayer beads, tapestries, gemstones, minerals, cultural CD’s, books, and much more!
